Lush green forests, breath-taking scenery, canyons, ravines, crystalline rivers, cascading waterfalls and stunning wildlife. The extraordinary biodiversity of Serrania de las Quinchas is a direct result of its geographic location, which brings together a series of unique qualities that have created ideal conditions for a rich and complex web of life
- The forests of Serrania de las Quinchas are located in the Magdalena River Valley in central Colombia between the Choco and Amazon rainforests, two of the most biodiverse places on Earth.
- Located on the foothills of Colombia’s Eastern Andes and ranging in altitude from 200 m (660 ft) to 1,700 m (5,600 ft), the different elevations of the cloud forests and forests create unique and different ecosystems of flora and fauna.
- Some of the plant and animal life found in Serrania de las Quincas is found nowhere else on Earth. A number of species are now critically endangered, like the Blue-billed Curassow (Crax Alberti) and the brown spider monkey (Ateles hudridus) considered to be one of the rarest primates on earth.
- The forests are still largely unexplored. Some species here have just been discovered for the first time and scientists believe there are many new plant species still to be found here that could hold important answers for medicine.
- Known as the second most important ‘lung’ of Colombia, after the Amazon region, the vast areas of forests here release oxygen and store carbon dioxide, the heat-trapping gas that is a major cause of global warming.
